Accessories: The Little Touches

Little details will have a really big effect in this hobby, and there are thousands of doll house accessories that you can have. These small details can be anything from small toothbrushes in the bathroom, to magazines for the bedroom bookcase. Adding these into your kit will spruce it up, add a fun touch, and cause visitors to sit and stare. In addition to design, it adds a realistic feel that says people actually live here. And don't hold back, there are so many miniatures out there that there is no reason you cannot get exactly what you want.

Using an Artists Color Wheel for your Benefit

Interior design, for your own personal home, or for your dollhouse kit can be a matter of color choices. Everyone that has gone to high school art or taken any basic art school knows a little bit about the color wheel. The basis of the wheel is that some colors are similar to one another, and others have contrast. Opposing colors are the most different and offer attractiveness to the eye called contrast, colors touching each other are the most similar and can be accent colors that heighten, but dont distract from the feel. As a first step into the designing realm for yourself, I recommend that you defiantly read up on the color coordination material that is on the internet or any good book, as it will really help your style.

Contrasting your Colors: Making things Pop

Contrast is the idea of putting to opposing colors or ideas next to each other. In this fashion you can generate movement of the eye from one area to another, or concentrate the focus of a room on one particular aspect. If you are planning to use color as your primary medium for contrast then refer to a color wheel - the colors opposite from one another will bring the most contrast. And remember, one can put too much contrast in a room very easily. The standard is to restrain yourself to one contrast in a room, this way it doesn't get cluttered.

Adding a Mood

Designers might know about lighting, and colors, but only the great ones design for mood. The mood of the room is chosen by the expectations of those that do, or plan to use it. An example is that you would have a kitchen to eat, have conversation, relax, cook etc. A bedroom would have a personal setting to illustrate the mood of that individual and help them feel comfortable. Just as houses are dictated by mood, a great dollhouse should as well. To help you get in the mood setting, picture the room and the feelings that emanate from that room, then design colors, furniture, and styles to match that setting. The more you can portray the appropriate move, the more you will convince your friends and family your great skills as a miniaturist.
