Creation Of Samurai Swords

By:

Some of the beginning samurai swords were given to the Queen Himeko around 240 AD. About forty years after this some iron swords were also imported.

By the sixth century, Japanese swordsmiths had created the unique steel hardening technique that would become the trademark for future Japanese weaponry. But it wasn't until the eighth century that Japanese blades became curved as fighting moved largely from ground combat to warfare on horseback.

The rise of the Samurai class came about in 1184-1333, starting when Minamoto no Yorimoto moved his shogunate to(for which this era is named). became something of afor swordsmiths and other artisans to gather, encouraging experimentation in sword styles galvanized by Masamune, one of the most famous Japanese swordsmiths of all time. Swords of this era were wider than earlier predecessors, and although highly improved in nature still had deficiencies that were illuminated during battles with Mongol hordes in 1274 and 1281. Points of these swords were often broken fighting Kublai Khan's warriors and demonstrated a need for improved design.

Beginning in 1334 there were wars that continued for about sixty years. These wars seperated the Northern and Southern empires ruled by Emperor Godaiko and Emeror Komyo. This is the time that ground warfare versus warfare on horses became more common and a need for longer swords developed. These longer swords were called Odachi. They are large and heavy and are held with two hands. They led to the modern samurai swords.

The wars between the two empires finally stopped and there was a time of peace. This time of peace was called Senkogu meaning the time the country was at war. This is the time when the tachi was shortened. This shortening of the tachi made it much easier for soldiers fighting on the ground.

Swords were later shortened even more which created the katana. The katana is the same thing as the modern samurai sword. The cutting edge was facing up so the sword could be taken out in one motion and be ready for battle.
