Creating The Perfect Staycation For Your Kids

By:

Children really know how to put the pressure on when it comes to vacations. Between pleas to attend the most popular theme park and repetitive requests to visit the family's favorite beach you may feel a bit anxious about telling your little ones that there will be no vacation. But why do you have to sacrifice the family bonding, fun activities, and relaxation that a vacation has to offer simply because you cannot leave town? Staycations, vacations that are spent at home, are perfect for busy families that need some time together that won't strain the budget.

Creating a staycation that your kids will love may be challenging, as getting them to see all of the wonderful things that your hometown has to offer can be hard, but once you break through that mental barrier and get them to accept that your home is as exciting as a beach house you will be well on your way to a happy, relaxed family. What? Your home isn't as exciting as a beach house? No worries, with these tips you will have your kids smiling, laughing, and letting loose throughout your entire staycation.

• Stock up on supplies. Nothing ruins a staycation like having to constantly run to the grocery store. Remember, this is to be a vacation at home, so whatever you would allow your children to each and drink that may not be on their regular menu should be allowed here, too. Don't overdo the sweets, as that will cause other issues, but let your kids indulge in their favorite snacks.

• Give your kids something to look forward to. The thing that differentiates the staycation from a regular weekend at home is the excitement, so break out a list of activities and attractions in your hometown and let your kids have a hand in putting together the itinerary. Be sure that you include activities that you don't normally do on the weekends, such as visiting the capital (if it's within a reasonable distance), taking a trip to local farms to pick seasonal fruit, going to the flea market, or visiting the local aquarium.

• Don't overdo it. Though you may want to cram in as much as you can, don't try to book your entire staycation and neglect the need for some down time. After a great day at a park or the museum take a family stroll on the beach, watch a movie together, or cook a family-style desert that everyone can take part in. Part of vacation is relaxation, and your kids need that just as much as you do.

• Stay positive! You may get tired or ready to call it a day early, but try to keep the energy up and enjoy your time as if you really are on a vacation. Your kids will remember the experience more favorably if they knew their parents were both excited about it.

Staycations are a great alternative to traditional vacations because they are cheaper, less stressful, and give you a chance to explore your hometown! Next time you plan a staycation for your family keep these tips in mind and you will create a "getaway" that everyone will remember!
