Creating Fertile Soil In Your Garden

By:

Lush nutrient rich soil is hard to come by, most of we are going to have to do some work in order for soil that is actually suitable for plant life. Ideally soil should be soft, loamy and loose enough to work with your hand.

However, most of us have dirt that is hard as rock in our back yard. If you are one of those who have been breaking shovels trying to till your ground, then you ought to learn the tricks.

First off, shovels are not the best tool for tilling. I actually combine forces of the fork and the hoe.

I live in an area with exceptionally hard soil, So I had to get creative with how I worked the earth. I got the fork and perforated the soil throughout where I was going to plant my garden.

I just stabbed the heck out of that earth. I imagine if the earth was a person the patch of tilled earth would look like a horribly gruesome crime scene.

Honestly I did probably expend a little more frustration that was absolutely necessary, but it helped to speed up the perforation process. After I had loosened the soil quite well, I started moving and working the soil with the hoe.

This I found was the fastest and easiest way to start making the earth suitable for my future garden. However, since I live in such dry climate I knew that I was going to have to amend my soil.

Soil pH is very important for plant life. It is like the difference between salt water and fresh water for fish.

You cannot have a fresh water fish live in salt water just like you can't have an acidic plant grow in alkaline soil. The soil where I live is quite alkaline, and most plants like slightly acidic soil.

So I just used traditional sulfur to lower the pH. This was easily done by spreading it over the tilled earth and then using the hoe to work it into the mixture of dirt.

So I now I had soil that was loamy and loose enough to work with and with the proper acidity, but I still needed nutrients. Even if you have a fresh water fish in fresh water you still got to feed it.

This is when purchased fertilizer, and a got a lot of it too. The stuff packed with potassium, nitrogen and phosphorous.

The man at the nursery told me those were the three key nutrients that plants use to grow. Now I have an amazing strawberry and spinach garden growing right in my back yard.
