Creating A Handcrafted Bookmark In 1, 2, 3

Bookmarks are not just your books best friends; but they are your good buddies as well. A bookmark can help you keep track of the page or pages you are reading. Now, have you tried making your own bookmarks? Let me teach you how.

Creating a bookmark is both fun and easy. You can make your bookmark pattern out of the supposedly trash you have such as old tickets, gift cards, gift wrappers, and pictures in used magazines. You can make them really personal, not to mention that they can also make for a fun gift for fellow bookworms. So lets get started.

First, know your purpose. In everything we do, we should always have a purpose. If you want to make print bookmarks for yourself, or as a gift to someone, or even to sell to earn some bucks, then that will be your purpose. Your purpose will determine what will be the outcome of your bookmark printing. Depending on the occasion, the personality of the person you ought to give the bookmark to, and definitely on your taste if you are making it for yourself, the design varies for your bookmark.

Second, gather all needed materials. After you have set your goal, gather the necessary materials in making bookmarks. These include thin cards, decorative papers, old concert tickets, photographs, scissors or craft knife, a mat, craft glue, thin ribbons, large beads, hole puncher, and laminator. (The last item, though, is optional.) If you're using something thin like gift-wrap or magazine clippings, you will need to make a backing card. You can also use scrapbook paper if you have it, because it comes in many unique designs that anyone will like, from checkerboard to glitter.

Third, undertake the process. This is the step by step procedure from cutting to laminating your bookmark printing.

1. Cut a piece of card to your desired size. 1.5 inches x 6 inches works well.
2. If needed, cut your subject (e.g. gift wrap, magazine clippings, etc.) down to the same size as your card.
3. Glue your subject to either one or both sides of the card and allow drying. Then trim any shaggy edges to a neat crisp line.
4. Preheat your laminate and place your bookmark inside a laminating pouch. If you don't have a laminator, go on with step 7.
5. Once laminated, trim the edges to approximately 4mm wider than your bookmark.
6. Punch a hole in the middle of the top of the bookmark to thread your tassel through.
7. To make your tassel, select some thin ribbon in coordinating color or colors of about 12-14 inches.
8. Fold the ribbon in half and tie a thick knot about one inch from the ends.
9. Thread 1-3 beads onto the ribbon & tie another knot above the beads to secure them.
10. Loop the "tassel" through the hole in the bookmark to finish.

Things to consider:

Take note that you can use almost any paper material to make a bookmark. Even newspapers can look great with a red tassel. But if you don't like the heavy beaded tassel, you can always purchase it from craft stores. Tie a small feather to the end of the ribbon. Use plain ribbon or not have a tassel at all. If your beads have a particularly large hole, you may need to knot the ribbon several times to make the knot large enough.

Lamination tip: If you're making more than one bookmark at once, to save time and money, arrange all your bookmarks inside the laminating pouch about half an inch from one another. Then secure with a dab from a clear glue-stick, just enough to hold them in place and laminate them all at once.

Knowing the steps by which to complete your bookmark printing can go a long way in saving you your precious dollars by doing it on your own.
