There are many applications to creating your own military ring. Each one depends on the specific story that you want your ring to tell. In the case of the young Field Artillery Officer the ring can tell a story of many different career paths.
The field artillery officer will normally attend the Cannon Battery Officers Basic Course. During this time he will be schooled in many various subjects to include the function of the Field Artillery Cannon Battery during combat. He will learn operational procedures for the artillery piece, to include movement techniques, communication, maintenance, safety, and firing the piece.
The Artillery Officer has a more general occupation so he will have to be trained in every different aspect of field artillery operations. He will also be trained in fire direction procedures as well. The Fire Direction Officer is responsible for the computation of firing data and sending it to the gun line. This is a high pressure job because speed is essential along with accuracy. Any mistakes from the Fire Direction Center will result in injury or death for friendly troops. This officer has a Non Commissioned Officer who actually runs the Fire Direction Center but the officer must be able to oversee all aspects of the operation and make corrections. He has to be knowledgeable in all aspects of fire direction. He is responsible for the successes and failures of his section in all aspects of the job. If his section is slow he suffers the consequences. If they make a critical mistake he will suffer for that mistake also.
The Field Artillery Officer must also be prepared to serve as a Fire Support Team Leader upon graduation from the basic course. Whenever he is assigned to his first unit he could actually serve in either one of these jobs or possibly something that he has not been trained t do at all. He must be versatile no matter where he lands and quickly learn every facet of his new job.
The FIST team provides indirect fire support to the Company Commander during combat operations. They have to provide fast, accurate fire support. When they are asked to call for fire they must be ready and able to perform because life and death is in the balance.
The Fire Support Officer is expected to know the tactics of the maneuver unit that he supports. He has to also know how to integrate the artillery into the plan of maneuver. This is a critical point in the career of the artillery officer because there is no time for a learning curve. When he graduates the basic course he is thrown into a real world situation where his superiors dont have the time or inclination to baby sit, or to waste reteaching basic skills.
The ring that the artillery officer creates will probably be different from that of every other artillery officer in the world because there are so many different directions that it can take. There are so many avenues that this officers career can take that he needs to have a wide range of possible choices.
The choices begin with the metal that the ring is made of and ends with the engraving which he places on the inside of the ring.
