Courier Companies And Their Packing Guidelines

By:

Almost every courier company that exists is going to have some sort of packing guidelines that you are expected to follow when preparing something for shipment. If you're doing business with a Portland courier service and have never seen their packing guidelines, you should ask them where you can get a copy right away. Failing to comply exactly to packing guidelines might not hurt you most of the time, but if you ever have a problem during your shipment it can be extremely frustrating if you find out that you didn't follow a rule that was posted somewhere, as it could impact your ability to submit a successful insurance claim on the shipment.

The packing guidelines that most couriers have are even very easy to follow, so there is really no reason to not make sure that you've adhered to them all. They include things like making sure that you're using the proper kind of packing tape rather than weaker scotch or masking tapes when sealing packages. Other common guidelines include having no other visible address or label information on the box other than the current shipping address, and making sure that anything heavy has been double boxed.

Packing guidelines are usually nearly self explanatory, but you should always review them for each courier that you do business with just in case there is something in there that you haven't seen before. If they don't have a copy of the guidelines right on their website, you should be able to request one which they can either drop off or email to you easily.

When you put in a claim for insurance payouts after a package has been damaged in transit with a courier, one of the things that they almost always require of you is that you include the original packaging of the shipment with the paperwork at some point during the claim. This is so they can verify that the package was originally shipped while adhering to all packing guidelines. If you've failed to do this, they can easily reject your claim on this basis.

So, you can see there is a financial incentive for adhering to the shipping guidelines. When mistakes are made in packing it is usually due to ignorance of these guidelines. Don't let yourself fall victim to that by making sure that you get a copy of your courier's guidelines as soon as possible. It will help ensure successful insurance claims if you have to make one.
