Could Your Kitchen Become Another Fire Statistic

By:

If you have ever been concerned about having a fire to happen in your home and you want to do everything that you can to prevent one, you should start in your kitchen. Although not every home fire starts in the kitchen chances are better that one will start there instead of somewhere else. Most of us, especially those of us with big families, use our kitchens everyday for some sort of cooking and where there is a possible flame there could possibly be a fire.

We do use the stove on a regular basis and because they use either electric or gas flames, it escalates the risk of starting a fire. Not always because of the stove itself, but because we can be careless. We might leave grease heating on the eye of the stove and walk away for a minute. This is the very cause of so many kitchen fires. We might leave a potholder or kitchen towel too near the stove eye and start a fire that way.

When we leave any flammable item too near the heat of the stove, it can only take seconds for it too blaze up and spread. You can walk out of the kitchen one minute and return a minute later and have to deal with a blaze that has already started to burn your counters and cabinets. This is why it is so essential that you keep a fire extinguisher nearby the stove. It can put out a blaze while it is still small enough to be contained.

Stoves are the cause of a lot of kitchen fires, but not the only one. Small electrical appliances can also cause them. Toasters, blenders, can openers, mixers, microwaves, toaster ovens, electric choppers, coffee pots, electric skillets, and electric deep fryers, can all start fires if they are plugged in incorrectly, have faulty cords, or when they simply malfunction. We should make sure these small appliances have good cords and are only run with the electrical current they are supposed to have.

Kids are doing more things in kitchens these days too. It is important that you accompany kids when they do things in the kitchen and teach them the safety rules about using the stove if they are allowed to. Using the stove should only be done by older kids who are able to comprehend the danger involved. When everyone in your home uses the kitchen responsibly, you will be reducing the risk that your kitchen becomes another home fire statistic.
