Could There Be A Flood From A Dam Where You Live

Dams hold a tremendous amount of water, depending how big it is and where it is at. If a dam breaks the water can flood any low lying areas near it. Homes can be flooded or washed away by the strength and force of the water as it escapes its confines. It can affect the lives of thousands or even millions of people if one of the many huge dams we have in our country were to break. The water could be so strong that it would knock down trees, tear down homes, take out bridges, and more. All the water that is in one of these dams could wipe out a town or two. It could be your town under water in minutes after the dam breaks.

It could end up being a few feet of water by the time it spreads out everywhere and there can be a lot of debris everywhere on top of the water. The flooding that would come from a broken dam can destroy the wildlife in your area. The costs could be in the millions to repair the dam and clean up all of the flooded mess that would remain. You can believe that if a town were to survive and thrive again, it would be something no one would ever forget.

When a dam breaks, the water run out fast and as the water runs out the dam can keep breaking as it gos until the water is gone. If a dam breaks, you can not stop it due to too much water escaping at one time. If a dam starts to break, there may not even be time enough to get out of the way. If you can not get out, get some place that is high off the ground so the water will not get to you.

It is unreal what a flood from a dam could do. you just will not want to think about it. There are dam inspections going on all over our country to find out if they are in need of repairs. They must be maintained well to insure that homes, property, or people are not at risk for the severe flooding that could happen. If there is a dam near your home, find out what is being done to the dam in the way of repairs. Find out if there are warning devices in place to alert you in case of a dam break. Do not be afraid to ask questions about dam safety and maintenance in your area and find out how safe you and your family actually are.
