Could The E Cigarette Be Dangerous To Children?

By:

The electronic cigarette, or e cigarette, has attracted the attention of many as of late.

"It is a device that can revolutionize the way people view smoking."
"It is a device that can save the lives of millions of people from smoking-related deaths."
"The e cigarette is safer and healthier when compared to cigarettes."

These are all claims from people who support the device.

Then there all claims from the other side of the spectrum: those who oppose it.

"Not enough research has been conducted on this device, and it could potentially be dangerous."
"Nicotine is an addictive drug."
"It can attract the attention of children because of its many different flavors."

Not only has the e cigarette been called a potentially dangerous device, but there are some who are concerned about how children and teenagers will respond to the product.

The opposition claims that the e cigarette is just like a cigarette, and youth will pick up on the habit because it is attractive. What they don't realize is that tobacco cigarettes have, and perhaps always will be, viewed as a contraption for rebellion. It is common knowledge that cigarettes are bad for you, so when an adolescent knows it's bad for you, he is more likely to pick up a cigarette in an act of rebellion than pick up an e cigarette, which he knows is not bad for him at all. After all, how many children have picked up a nicotine inhaler in an act of rebellion? Those who do pick up that device are ones with a drug problem, and the product itself is not to blame.

There is also concern about the different flavors of e liquid attracting kids. Since the refill cartridges can come in such flavors as apple, cherry, coffee, and vanilla, many are worried about it attracting children. If e cigarettes are outlawed for that reason, then all potentially dangerous products that have different flavors should then be prohibited. This includes cough syrup, various medications, and even flavored condoms.

What parents need to realize is that direct action must be taken with children to prevent them from doing anything. While the control and influence of a parent is limited and that the child will, in the end, make the decisions in his life, parents need to educate their children on what is and what isn't good. Sometimes, a child with a very good upbringing will end up doing "bad" things anyway, and in cases like those, there really is nothing you can do but show your support and hope he makes his changes.

It is up to the responsibility of parents, teachers, and other public health officials to educate children and the public about the dangers associated with smoking - period. Supporters, on the other, claim that these allegations are moot.
