Could That Discomfort Be Acid Reflux?

By:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is more commonly known as acid reflux or heartburn and revisits many victims everyday. This condition can range from uncomfortably mild or can be very serious, causing serious issues. The more a individual understands what this disease is all about, they will be better equipped to determine if this pain and discomfort is causing them grief. That burning sensation, or if the burning pain can move from the stomach into other areas such as the throat or the abdomen a couple times a week, they most likely have a acid reflux issue.

The problem with acid reflux lies with the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES. That is the ring of muscle that is basically the valve at the entrance to the stomach. If this valve does not work right by opening too frequently or not closing all the way, it will allow the acid in your stomach to be released into the esophagus. The acid is what causes the burning sensation because it is in a place where it does not belong.

Some people will have this trouble because they have a Hiatal hernia. A Hiatal hernia causes the LES and the top part of the stomach to move above the diaphragm instead of it's normal position, below it. When it all is in the proper position the diaphragm works to keep the acid where it belongs, in the stomach. When the acid gets out, it causes the pain and trouble. A Hiatal hernia is not the only reason that people will suffer from this disease.

The easy ways to control acid reflux is to closely examine and restrict what we eat and a good place to start is by avoiding over stuffing or eating during a meal and never lay down after such a meal. This is especially true for holiday or special occasion meals such as Thanksgiving where over stuffing the stomach is an acceptable practice. These marathon eating days are best observed with smaller more frequent meals to help keep acid reflux in check and more comfortable. Continuing to overeat will not only show up in the form of acid reflux, but in extra weight that needs to be transported every time a person moves and will deliver more health problems. Foods that are considered to be triggers need to be avoided also. Each person will react differently, however there are some common foods and liquids to avoid such as alcohol, caffeine and acidic foods.

If you start to notice a significant change in you stomach reactions after you eat, you might what to closely investigate acid reflex and it's signs. The most common sign is heartburn that people will notice immediately because of the nasty sour taste, caused by a slight regurgitation of acid into the throat that is very uncomfortable as well as the chest and stomach areas. Bloating and continuous burping as well as a throat blocking sensation has also been reported as evident signs of acid reflux.
