Could Solar Panels For All Be The Way Forward For Britain?

There are rumours abound that Japan intends to announce at the upcoming G8 Summit a plan which will make it compulsory for all buildings in the country to be fitted with solar panels by 2030.
Many are speculating that the recent tsunamis experienced in large parts of the country have acted as the trigger towards this proposed course of action. It is also believed that Japan wants to continue to be viewed as one of the leading global advocates of renewable energy and this will help them maintain this reputation.
Although last year saw a record number of solar panel installations taking place in the UK, the vast majority of the country has still yet to realise the potential of solar panel systems, despite the recent introduction of schemes such as the Feed in Tariff (FIT). FIT recompenses those who invest into renewable energy, giving them the opportunity to earn money from the electricity they generate through their solar panels.
At the end of 2010, the government announced that renewable energy currently accounts for around 9% of the total electricity produced in this country. The UK coalition has set an ambitious target of 20% of electricity to come solely from renewable energy sources by 2020. On a worldwide scale, it is hoped that renewable energy will contribute 80% of global energy by 2050.
There will undoubtedly be many people in the UK who would like to invest in solar panel installers as it is a proven way of cutting energy bills, designed to last and will help make the world a more environmentally-friendly place.
But, the overriding factor is that the installation of solar panels in the UK is financially out of reach of most and the monetary rewards to be gained from them will often not be evident until 20 years down the line.
As you can see, there is a lot work to be done if we are to meet these national and international objectives and perhaps making solar panels compulsory in the UK could help speed the process.
If indeed the rumours surrounding the Japanese governments plans are true and they prove to be a success, it would certainly give Prime Minister David Cameron and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Chris Huhne, plenty food for thought.
