Could Gold Standard Be Brought Back?

By:

For some people, gold standard seems to be a delicate issue. They have to realize that bringing the gold standard back could actually be a good thing.

A monetary system cannot be characterized as being rigid just because it is based on gold. What we actually don't see is that the only rule that is imposed by the gold standard is the one on the central bank's printing press. The government simply has to maintain a fixed dollar/gold exchange rate, and this is not such a bad thing after all.

The purchasing power of the dollar does not fall by bringing the gold standard back, it can actually increase over time. Most economists all over the world have reached the conclusion that a long-term predictability in the monetary policy has many advantages. One of the best things that the monetary authorities can do is to make sure that the currency has a stable purchasing power.

The affirmation according to which the dollar-price of gold is stable only under a gold standard is not supported by history. What can be considered an advantage of using gold as money is that the annual output represents only a small fraction of the total world stockpile. One thing that we will never have to fear is that if the prices are expressed in gold they will reach astronomic heights. The only bad thing that comes to mind is if all the producers in the world stopped doing their jobs in order to punish the US. For this to be possible all the countries would have to cut off all their buyers. The question is why would they want to do this?

Defeating gold standard is futile because it would be like defending the Bill of Rights. Bringing gold standard back can only be a good thing and this should be clear for all of us. In the meanwhile what we could do is to start investing in gold, as this commodity will never fail us.
