Could Glass Worktops Be A Viable Alternative To A Complete New Kitchen?

If you're looking to increase the size of your kitchen you could be looking at quite an expensive remodelling project. On the other hand, you could cheat a little and get some glass worktops. Surprisingly this is something a growing number of people are finding, and it's a solution that really does work.

The fact is of course that adding in glass worktops isn't going to magically expand the physical dimensions of your kitchen. But often the reason people want to expand the physical size of the kitchen by knocking through internal walls or building an extension isn't always just for more room, but for more space.

Is there a difference? Well often there is, because space can be very subjective, and has more to do with how you feel in a room than the size of the room itself. A kitchen may be perfectly big enough, but somehow give the impression of there being little space to it. Opening up a room can transform it much more cheaply, and without the hassle of remodelling a kitchen whilst still trying to cook food each day. Glass worktops and glass splashbacks can certainly offer this benefit, but more than this, they can help to not only add more apparent space to a kitchen, but also have a real impact on the overall feel and atmosphere of the room.

This is because coloured glass worktops and splashbacks can be used, rather than just clear or frosted glass, and this adds even more to the room. The problem with most kitchen materials, whether it be wood veneer, granite, quartz or tiles is that they all absorb light. As daylight or internal lighting hits the work surfaces and the splashbacks the light is almost completely absorbed.

This is especially true if your work surfaces happen to be dark in colour, which for some reason they often are. Walk into almost any kitchen showroom and you'll almost certainly find about half the work surfaces and splashbacks are either black or brown, but these really make a room feel small and close. You don't really want to feel as though you're preparing dinner in a lift, and yet we often choose these colours because we're told they're fashionable and stylish and look good. They may well do, but for most of us with kitchens that aren't big enough to hold a full wedding reception in, dark colours aren't always a good idea.

Glass reflects light, no matter what colour it is, and so immediately having glass worktops or glass splashbacks in the kitchen lets the light pass through, and be reflected, opening up the space instantly. Space can be measured, albeit subjectively, by the amount of light that can be reflected throughout a room. The more light, and the more it can freely reflect around a room, the more spacious and calming it feels.

Bathrooms are often very small, but they don't necessarily feel as claustrophobic because often the surfaces are white, letting light reflect more easily. Glass worktops can achieve this effect within the kitchen whilst offering a very tough surface that can be cleaned hygienically in seconds. Coloured glass worktops and splashbacks can also be a great solution in cases where you want to add more of an overall atmosphere. For example, having green, yellow or blue splashbacks or worktops can make the kitchen feel fresh, clean and spacious, whereas orange, amber or red shades make the kitchen feel warm and cosy, whilst still allowing more light to reflect throughout the room.

If your kitchen feels a little small or a little plan then you might consider replacing your worktops and splashbacks with glass worktops, for an instant transformation which could make you fall in love with your kitchen all over again, and could certainly save you from a complete remodelling project.
