Could Bmw Shoot Themselves In The Foot With The 0-series

The car industry never stays still, not even for a minute and the latest news to hit the press is regarding German car giants BMW, who have announced that they will be releasing a new mini car that will fill the gap between the BMW made Mini and the 1-Series.

The new car will be named the 0-Series, which actually makes the car sound like a gimmick, some form of clean emissions car or maybe it means it will just lack character, substance and style. I'm not a fan of this form of rebranding of products. The only reason I drink Coffee is for the caffeine, it's not for the taste. If I didn't want a caffeine boost I would drink a refreshing squash drink as opposed to a coke zero.

Thankfully initial reports suggest that the car will be filled with all of the usual style, presence and poise of other BMW's currently on the market, but my question would be, is there any need for the new 0-Series? BMW already has a mini car in the form of the Mini, admittedly it is not their official brand, but it is still owned by the company.

Making another mini car could end up costing the company a lot of money. It is likely to work in one of two ways, either the company will detract from sales of their other brand or people will see little point in purchasing the new BMW and instead it will be considered a flop.

The German manufacturer does have an outstanding reputation for producing a range of cars that appeal to the general public and sell. They are usually backed up by clever marketing campaigns which are thought up by the extremely clever executives at BMW HQ.

The biggest problem advertising firm's face is marketing a product when you have no demand for it. Obviously it is a challenge that I'm sure the company will relish, but at the same time when the car market isn't at its strongest should BMW be investing money in creating a new mini car? The answer to that question will only become apparent when we finally see sketches of the new car.

Personally if I was BMW I would hold off production of this new car until 2011 - 2012 when the market might be more stable or scrap the plan altogether, Mini owners will never allow the car to go out of production, with the popularity of the car keeping it in the spotlight. From my point of view there will only ever be one mini car when it comes to UK sales and that will be the Mini.
