Could 2009 Be A Record Flood (flooding) Year?

By:

The outlook for chances of floods throughout all of 2009 looks very probable. NOAA has predicted that the threat for widespread flooding is at a high risk level because of large scale climate signals that set the stage for such disasters. It has already broken records by being the year with the most severely flooded widespread areas in over one hundred years. Flooding this year has been categorized as historically unprecedented. Over 30,000 people in the United States have been displaced from their homes due to large scale flooding, especially in the Midwest. The Midwest floods have wrought havoc on farmlands as well.

The melting snow this spring has escalated the number of floods throughout the season. There have been extreme flooding conditions all along the Red River, especially in Fargo, North Dakota. There have also been several flooded areas all throughout North Dakota. Alaska has also been affected by floods this year, suffering its worst flood disaster it has seen in 70 years. Melting ice has played a major factor in the flooding in Alaska. The progressive warming of our environment has put us at a higher risk for flooded conditions. Flood plain development has increased throughout the years and is one of the reasons for the higher average of people affected by flood disasters. Deforestation has been another factor that's added to the severity of the 2009 floods.

Flooding is a natural disaster that affects people in all fifty states. It only takes a small amount of standing water to create unclean living conditions, and it devastates and destroys homes and personal belongings. It is thought that only 2 inches of water can lead to this kind of devastation. If you own or rent property, it may serve you well to consider flood insurance, because no matter where you live there is a risk of flooding, and standard homeowner's insurance does not carry protection for flood damage. It is a very good idea to be aware of what to do to ensure your safety during a flood because more people die during floods than any other type of severe weather situation. The best way to prepare for a flooding situation is to educate yourself on the flood risks wherever you live, and recognize the potential for disaster. Many feel that so far, 2009 has shown us the 3rd worst flooding year in a century, but this decision will not be finalized until we've seen all of what 2009 has to bring in the term of weather disasters. From what we've seen in the first half of 2009, it's safe to say that flooding will be a major factor in most natural disasters within the United States this year.
