Couch To Five K None Stop!

Couch To Five K None Stop!

By:

For the last twenty years I've been asked how did I ever get off the couch and continue to run in a five k. It's been that long, since I tossed the cigarettes and became a runner. I've been asked what was the special reason…the number one magical moment that moved me off the couch to running in a five k?

I remember just like it was yesterday. My wife and I were on the couch watching the New York City marathon. During the race the commentator would tell about the different runner's backgrounds. The runner's came from all different age groups. Some were formally overweight, smokers, drinkers…actually a past of a whole gamma of different backgrounds. I was moved!

The second reason, my wife was under going chemo treatments from having a bone marrow transplant. It scared me enough that I knew I wanted no part of cancer! The third reason was…I had been having some chest pains at times myself. If these are not good enough reasons, then you should stop reading this article at this very moment!

If your still reading this article, then I'll tell you some of the benefits you can acquire from running. As well as how to go from couch to running in a 5k in four months. Running will become a habit to you…right after you get home from work. Instead of flopping down on the couch…you put on your running shoes and shorts and head back out your front door.

At first you won't be able to run very far but that's ok, this is what you do. As you get past your next door neighbor's house, step into a slow jog. You'll only be able to run past three or four houses at a time. When you start huffing and puffing slow to a walk. Now you should keep walking past three or four houses. At this point step back into a slow jog again. Continue in this scenario all the way around the block. Most average blocks are about a half of a mile.

Each day run past more houses and walk past less houses. After a few weeks you should be able to get completely around the block with no slowing to a walk. Congratulations your now able to run a half of a mile! Continue with this same pattern into your second month. Except, add another loop around the block in the same scenario as you did your first loop. By the end of the second month you should you be able to run two loops around the block non-stop. Congratulations are in order once again. Your now able to run one mile!

The third month is a little different. Your going to add another mile instead of a half of a mile throughout the month. You guessed it! Move into the forth month in the same pattern as you did in the third. By the end of the forth month you've accomplished your goal! Your off the couch and able to run in your first five k. Remember the first five k is just to complete it without slowing to a walk. We'll work on speed in your second five k without the couch of coarse! But that's in another whole article. Good going five k-er!
