Cost Effective Home Improvements

By:

There are many things you can do to remodel the look and feel of your home without breaking the bank to do so. The first suggestion is to take a real look at the color. The paint on the wall, or the stain on the cabinets, or the pattern on the curtains or carpet change everything about a room. If you were remodeling your kitchen, for example, using modern colors or unique appliance knobs can make an old kitchen cutting edge.

Another suggestion is to surround shelving with painted molding to match the room. This adds a level of elegance to the room, as well as keeps items from sliding off the shelf. A variety of materials can be used. Use your imagination.

Try cutting a hole in a wall to bring in more light from the outdoors, or to combine the energy of two rooms. As long as you do not harm the structural integrity of the home, this can have a dramatic impact on a room.

A feature that we have used in our own kitchen is the display of kitchen utensils. Underneath one cabinet we fastened two rows of hooks in which we are able to hang spatulas, ladles, whisks, and whatever else. In the corner, we attached to heavily magnetic strips the hold our knives in perfect order. Not only does this look attractive in the kitchen, it is extremely handy. The old fashioned days of the wooden block, where you never know which knife you are pulling out, are over.

Some have had success in taking a wall that has no use, and adding decorative shelving. Easy and affordable, can really accent the room. Instead of hanging a family picture on the wall, now there is room to rest many picture frames without looking too crowded. This once ignored wall is now a highlight and pulls guests in for a closer look.

Here is a trick. Now days, the most expensive furniture and cabinets often are found with intentional marks known as the distressed look. If your cabinets have been through a lot, I suggest intentionally restyling them to look antique on purpose. You can replace all the hinges, handles and knobs as modern as you would like, but consider using painting techniques that give it an authentic look. You can find many ideas for this as your hardware store.
