Cost Cutting On Your Car Buying

Cost Cutting On Your Car Buying

By:

The automotive world has been hit by some pretty tough times recently. Everyone with a car is reeling from the phenomenal rise in petrol over the last 12 months, tax and insurance bands have changed, new car sales have fallen...very little good news seems to be reaching us. The only sign of optimism is the advance in hybrid and electric technology for a greener future.

In such a time as this, then, many people are thinking of downsizing or looking for a more economical car. Where once people may have headed to their local car dealer for a new Audi Q7, they might now opt for a cheaper, used estate model to cut costs. With a huge range of cars on offer though, what should a price-conscious, environmentally aware buyer go for?

For starters, a smaller engine means petrol or diesel is less expensive, and if you choose a car with a good ratio of miles to the gallon, you will spend less time filling up. With fuel-efficiency comes cheaper tax as well. Under the new tax regulations, any car emitting less than 100g/km of CO2 is eligible for road tax exemption on account of its economical merit. Many leading manufacturers such as Peugeot, Fiat and Volkswagen now produce cars that fall into this category.

The cost of the car itself is an issue too. Rather than going for a brand new car that loses a large part of its resale value on leaving the forecourt, many dealers are doing great deals on used cars. Make sure the car has a full service history in order to help retain value and to avoid surprise performance problems.

Keeping your car maintained is important to keep it running smoothly. It might seem expensive but it is preferable to breaking down in the middle of nowhere and will help you get a better price for your car. That holiday to the Lake District won't be the same if you end up having to get car servicing in Cumbria before you can take any scenic drives!

Choosing a smaller, quality used car might not feel as exciting as getting a powerful new one, but it is guaranteed to make you happier in the long run, and your wallet will thank you for it!
