Cost And Tips For Learning To Drive In The Uk

By:

The driving test in Great Britain is the toughest in the world with the standard required to pass it set very high compared
too many other countries. It therefore requires a lot of practice to reach the required level of competence before applying
to take one with the main reason for failure being people thinking they are ready when they are not. This is an expensive
process involving various costs along the way and therefore getting it right first time can save you a lot of time and money.
Here is a guide to the costs that you can expect to pay to help you work out a budget and timescale on which to base your
training. Please note that due to constantly changing prices this is a rough guide and you should check the current price of
each stage.

Provisional License - You will have to pay for a provisional license to allow you to be able to legally drive on the public
roads which is priced at 50 at the time this article was written. This only entitles you to drive on public roads while
supervised and having L plates fitted to the front and rear of the vehicle and motorway driving is completely forbidden.
Supervision must be by a driving instructor or someone who is over 21 and has held a full license for over three years.

Theory Test This must be passed before a driving test can be applied for although driving lessons can be taken before this
is done. There are two costs involved in this part the first being the cost of the study material required containing the
information that you need to learn for this test and the cost of the test itself. The minimum study materials you will
require for this are three books and a CD-ROM and these are.
The Highway Code
Driving the Essential Skills
Official DSA Theory Test Question Bank
Any Hazard Perception CD-ROM
These can be found in all major bookshops or bought from sites like Amazon or the DSA and be prepared to pay around 30 for
all these items. Dont try to do this test with less material as you are more than likely going to fail and have to do the
test again incurring extra cost and time. The current cost at time of writing this article is 31 and this is normally
increased at least once a year.

Driving Lessons This is the most expensive part of the process and you can expect to pay 20 per hour for professional
tuition. Your driving instructor is the key to your success make sure that they are approved by the DSA by checking the badge
that must be displayed on the windscreen checking both the picture and expiry date. Also note that a green or blue color
denotes a fully qualified instructor while a pink or red badge is a trainee instructor. Having been an instructor delivering
driving lessons in Glasgow for many years I know that there are good and unfortunately quite a few bad instructors. Do not be
slow or afraid to change your instructor if you feel uneasy with them or that progress is to slow. Average hours tuition to
reach test standard should be around 40 but some people do require more and so basing an estimated price on this figure the
total cost including a driving test which is currently 62 would be around 1000.
