Cosmetic Surgery 101: An Overview Of Breast Lift Surgery

By:

Natural breasts lose their shape and firmness as a result of aging skin that loses its elasticity, major weight loss, or multiple pregnancies. The result is sagging, deflated breasts and, sometimes, self-esteem issues for the woman. Breast lift surgery can lift the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. If appropriate, a breast lift procedure may be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation surgery. Breast lift surgery can also reposition breasts that already have implants but have sagged over the years.

Any woman who is in generally good health and wants to improve her appearance or confidence with younger-looking, perkier breasts is a candidate for a breast lift. There is not an age requirement to have the surgery.

There are several techniques that may be used for a breast lift. Which one is used for a particular patient depends on the size of the patient's breasts and how low the breasts sag. Each technique has unique advantages and disadvantages.

Breast lift surgery is typically performed in the surgeon's office on an outpatient basis. Patients can be administered either general anesthesia or local anesthesia in conjunction with oral sedation. Breast lift surgery takes one to three hours. Patients can typically return to work one week after breast lift surgery.

Severe complications relating to breast lift surgery are extremely rare and include infection, hematoma, and scarring. The patient can expect to experience bruising, discomfort, and swelling to last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. The final results of the breast lift can be seen in a few months. The results of a breast lift should last for quite a few years assuming the patient does not experience any significant weight loss or weight gain or does not experience pregnancy.

Typically, the costs of breast lift surgery are not covered by insurance. Occasionally, insurance will cover the costs, but, again, it is uncommon. Surgeons usually offer financing options to help patients cover the costs of surgery.
