Hi, I'm Dr. Barry Lycka and I'm here to talk today about cosmetic surgery tips. I am writing today about how I became a Cosmetic Dermatologist. One of the things I'm constantly being asked by my clients is how does a person become a Cosmetic Dermatologist?

Well, I'll tell you the road is not a straight one. It's one that has a lot of loops and nooks and crannies along the way. It's one that has taken me a lot of years to evolve. And I've been evolving as a Cosmetic Dermatologist for over 25 years.

I graduated from medicine back in 1983. Back then, cosmetic dermatology was just being thought of as a field. So a lot of people didn't have a lot of knowledge of it. I then went through several internships and rotations. I did two years of internal medicine. So I
learned how the body functions and learned how to treat bodies that way.

Then, I went into a residency in dermatology and I studied at the University of Minnesota from 1986 to 1989. Now back then, Dermatology was just evolving into a cosmetic field. We were just starting to get into some of the early lasers. We had argon lasers. One week before we graduated, they invented a laser for treating blood vessels on the face called the 'Tunable Dye Laser'. And back then, it was broken down a lot. In fact, the laser was broken down for the first six months of being at that dermatology department and very few people had access to it. We also had CO2 lasers for treating things, but we really didn't understand all the workings and implications of that, so most of my training came from seminars and training sessions outside of my regular program.

Now back in 1989, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, a dermatologist from Vancouver and his wife Jean were actually starting to use Botox to treat wrinkles and that was the first days. They started using it on people to treat some strabismus or squinting of the eye. Well, what happened next is thousands and thousands of people noticed that the wrinkles would go away. And so the doctors started using this all for treating wrinkles and now it's the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the world. I learned Botox from them
and a lot of others between 1989 and about 1994. Now I treat thousands of people with Botox every year and that's huge. People love this procedure. It's one of those procedures I call 'Happy Medicine' because more and more people get this everyday and they're so happy with it.

Now, we also use other things such as fillers a lot. Fillers, when I was in residency, the only filler we had was collagen. Collagen was an absolutely awful material. What made collagen awful was a short period of time that it was useful for. Most people would get collagen done and it would last between six weeks and three months which really, really wasn't a long period of time.

Since that time, we've got more and more in the way of using collagen and other fillers. Our main fillers are hyaluronic products and materials such as Sculptra and other materials that we use everyday. We find that Sculptra is an amazing material. We find that Radiesse is amazing material and we love our HA products, our hyaluronic products a lot.
Again, I learned these from going through courses. I learned these from going to seminars. Back in the early 1990s, I also decided that other doctors didn't know how to do this, so I developed a club called the Mastermind Club, where doctors come from all over Canada and the United States to learn the intricate procedures of Cosmetic Surgery. So we get together several times a year.

So how does a doctor become a Cosmetic Dermatologist? The answer is with training, the right attitude, the right opportunity. You should go to places to learn things even if they're miles apart. And once I flew over to France to spend some time with Pierre Fournier. I flew to Mexico to spend some time with my friend Carl Bazan who taught me how to do a Thread Lift procedure.

A doctor that's a Cosmetic Dermatologist must avail themselves of all the procedures they possibly can do and I find that and go and learn from the masters. At my phase of the game, I'll only learn from the masters. I spend time with the masters. I'll fly anywhere in the world to work with the masters. But then people come to study with me as well. Why? Because I'm considered the master to many people. And I really am thrilled that people do that.
