Cosmetic Dermatology 2012 Predictions By Edmonton Dr Barry Lycka

Cosmetic Dermatology 2012 Predictions By Edmonton Dr Barry Lycka

By:

Say hello to 2012. It's going to be a beautiful year. That's if the trends I foresee for cosmetic therapies come true. I'm Dr. Barry Lycka, Edmonton Dermatologist. I'm the host of YourCosmeticDoctor dot TV and here in no particular order are my 12 predictions for the coming 12 months. Use it as your checklist.

1. Consumers Want Low Prices & Little, Or No, Downtime
A 5% rise in cosmetic surgery last year? Simple. People want jobs and looking youthful is a competitive advantage. They also are worried about keeping their jobs which leads them to demand keen prices and no downtime. This trend will continue in the coming year.

2. More Men Want Cosmetic Surgery
More men than ever are undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures, according to the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, including facelifts, liposuction, Botox and breast reduction. I think we'll see more of this in the coming year. The theory is that baby boomers are yearning to perpetuate their youth but what keeps even more of them away I believe, is fear of pain. Maybe those boomers are just babies.

3. Minimal Procedures Will Grow Even More
Botox, a minimally invasive treatment for example is up 12%. This is a trend I have seen heavily in 2011 and I've also gone into analyzing this trend and supporting it. I've brought on innovations like Ulthera and Cellulaze. The results make me eager to invest and more doctors will be doing so as well.

4. More Revolutionary Topical Products
As a dermatologist, I welcome some amazing products to apply to the skin. Pro-Niacin is a revolutionary molecule that penetrates deeply to repair UV-induced DNA damage associated with skin cancer. I think we'll see more of these products coming out in the next year. Many dark-skinned people have pigmentary problems in which their skin is unevenly covered. New herbal formulations will soon be out that will help people with this with less inflammatory side effects than prescription products. There will be more acceptance and better results.

..And New Barrier Creams
Soon, people who have experienced inflammation after laser resurfacing will have new barrier creams which enhance healing to restore the skin's natural defenses.

5. New Surgical Techniques
Cutting-edge science may now be going further than fillers or face lifts. Selphyl is a technique that restores volume to the face, not with synthetics but by injecting your own plasma which contains growth hormones. In the similar way, your stem cells taken from your blood will soon be used to help repair damage underneath the dermis which causes wrinkles and volume depletion.

6. Beyond Botox
Both Botox and Dysport are safe and successful. Soon, newer agents will be out. Xeomin for example, which blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles and causes vertical frown lines. That's right. It freezes out wrinkles.

7. Now, there's a new generation of fillers I'm excited about. In Europe, there are over a thousand HA fillers available, while a new one, Voluma is really exciting because physicians have rated an astonishing 89% of patients much improved or very much improved after treatment. And this product lasts longer so it won't be broken down as easily.

8. More Doctors Using Lasers
Now, there's an antecdotal thing I've been seeing and that's many doctors I chat to are buying lasers. There have probably been more competition in this which may be good for the consumer but it may be bad for the doctor.
Now how do you choose a great doctor out of this scenario where everybody is buying lasers? Well, I've got good news for you. I have a new book coming out in the next few months which I've explained precisely how to get a good cosmetic doctor.

9. Cosmetic Surgery Debate Hots Up!
Oscar-winning actresses and pop icons have been coming out both in and against having work done. But as more people get vocal, the number of procedures continues to increase. Can I see this debate going away pretty soon? Not anytime this year. It will become more intense.

10. More Providers Will Offer Cosmetic Procedures
How would you feel about your dentist doing cosmetic treatments? Well, many dentists are already doing Botox and some are doing fillers. Now, dentists know a fair bit about facial anatomy, but guess what? There are also people that are NOT trained that are doing these procedures. Be very aware of this when you seek out care from doctors. Let the buyer beware.

11. Remove Armpit Sweating For Good? Maybe !
Hyperhidrosis, that's the term for embarrassing excessive perspiration. When it affects under the arms, there are some new treatments that will soon become available. MiraDry which uses microwave energy, Ulthera which we use to tighten the skin might also be used for this, as might be Thermage. The lasers I use for liposculpture might also be used for this in the near future as well. Think of this, multiple ways to treat hyperhidrosis.

12. More Young People Will Want Cosmetic Surgery
A survey says that 90% of 10 to 18-year olds aren't happy with how they look. Airbrush images are said to be giving them an unrealistic ideal of female beauty. Will that lead them to premature cosmetic surgery? I think so. More doctors will be asked to do this. Some doctors might actually do it.

Conjecture, controversy, crystal ball gazing and some pretty educated guesses too ... which of my predictions will turn out right?
