Correct Slice-stop The Bends

By:

What is a correct slice? I keep wondering what people mean when they type it into a search engine. OK I was joshing.

A slice is the horrible but all too common shot you see on any golf course. The ball starts off flying down the fairway when suddenly it takes a turn to the right and hides in the woods.

There is a golfing term used frequently that says "The woods are full of long hitters." This isn't the right context but it does illustrate a point I am going to make.

The best way to get a correct slice is to try and whack the ball as hard as you can. The best golfers and all good golfers for that matter do not attempt to hit the ball at all!

Yeah, right,I can hear you say but it is true. The proper way to play golf is to let the ball get in the way of your swing. Adjust your focus, you are not hitting the ball it is just in the way of your swing.

If you can grasp this simple re-adjustment you will play far better golf and more consistently.

Aiming at the golf ball causes to things two happen, the first is you decelerate on the downswing and you start to hit 'from the top.'

Hitting from the top means pumping up the power at the transition phase of your swing and this causes one of the prime reasons for a slice.

Your hands begin to move away from your body coming out in front and this means your swing is going to move from outside the ball line to inside it. This brings your club face, whether square or not, into contact with the golf ball on a sliding plane which promotes the spin which causes a slice.

You can correct slice shots by ensuring that your right elbow drops to your side as you start your down swing as this will keep your club head inside the ball line. To practice this you can set up to the ball and deliberately try to hit the ball to the right.

This is the antithesis of a slice and by over correcting you can feel the difference then it is just a matter of adjusting and practicing until you consistently bring the club head down on the correct plane.

I hope this easy tip will help you to correct slice shots in the future.
