Corner Clamps: An Useful Woodworking Device

By:

A clamp is a fastening tool, which provides compressive force to hold object in order to prevent any type of movement or separation. Corner clamps also known as mitre clamps or picture frame clamps are specially designed woodworking clamps, which are used for specific purposes. Woodworking clamps are tools that are used to secure one or more wood pieces in place for screwing, gluing, cutting or other woodworking functions, which require the wood pieces to be still. Most of the woodworking clamps feature some sort of padded or broad surfaces to prevent the damage to the wood pieces being clamped. Moreover, the jaws of woodworking clamps can be adjusted inward or outward for easily securing or releasing the wood piece. The shape, size and function of woodworking clamps vary significantly.

Corner clamps are mainly used in the corner joints. These types of clamps are designed to hold two wood pieces together at a right angle (90-degree). Use of these clamps ensures that the joint is as square and tight as possible. However, these clamps are not useful for other angles or other purposes. The mitre clamps can adjust to various thickness of wood. These clamps are especially suitable for thin pieces of plywood or mdf, where it is hard to drive pegs or screws.

Corner clamps have several applications. They are primarily used for screwing or gluing the corners of picture frames, bookcases, desks, cabinets, molding or trim. These woodworking clamps enable you to make several homemade products. You can use the waste wood pieces, which are lying in your backyard or buy wood pieces in bulk at cheap rates and use mitre clamps to build doll houses, roomboxes, display cases, storage containers for kids, wooden handle with six wings for holding glasses and wooden spoon holder. The mitre clamps are also used for cable management applications.

There are several models of corner clamps that are available in the market. Most of the mitre clamps consist of I handle, which helps the carpenter in achieving the easy and quick thickness adjustments of nearly 1-1/4 inches. Moreover, the quick lever and innovative swivel heads present in the mitre clamps improve their ease of use. The large heat treated clamping surface made from stainless steel that is featured with nickel plating gives higher longevity to the clamp. Also, it protects the soft pieces of wood against the work piece imprint of the mitre clamps.

Few other clamps apart from corner clamps that are used for woodworking purposes are F-clamps, hand screw clamps and C-clamps.
