Coral Castle In Homestead Florida

Many people that travel to southern Florida may have passed through a little town called Homestead. It is just 30 miles south of Miami. They have to go this way to visit the Florida Keys. On the left hand side of the road you will see a sign for the Coral Castle. Here are a few reasons why you should stop by this amazing tourist attraction.

The Coral Castle was made by Edward Leedskalnin over 70 years ago. It is made of two kinds of oolite coral that is native to that area. Many of the pieces weigh in excess of 10 tons each. The amazing thing is that no one knows how Ed was able to create this structure by himself.

Back in the day, cranes that were used to move heavy objects like steel girders and large logs were used by people with money, They were either building a construction project or logging in a designated area. A regular person even today does not have access to the machinery needed to move the pieces of this 1100 ton structure.

The creator of Rock Gate Park was said to have done it all on his own, without help from anyone or anything. He made a 9 ton gate that spins with the touch of a finger. Imagine making a gate that weighed 18,000 pounds. How would you move it? How would you make it spin? How would you be able to find the exact center of an irregularly shaped piece of coral and then drill a hole through it with laser precision with primitive tools?

Most of the people that have made the long journey to see the castle are simply amazed. Whether you are looking at the Tower that served as Ed's home and tool shop, or the table that is in the shape of Florida, it is clear that a genius was at work crafting objects that have only been seen at ancient archeological sites around the world.

Did Edward Leedskalnin know the secrets of the pyramid builders? It is possible given the size of the objects that he had to cave and move into place. The precision also seems to reflect a high level of knowledge to only skilled architects could have been able to pull off. Whatever he knew, it is lost now. He died of stomach cancer in Miami decades ago leaving only the castle itself as proof of his abilities and knowledge.

Many scientists from the University of Florida have concluded simply that they do not know how Ed Leedskalnin was able to make his coral masterpiece. It has simply been categorized as a modern wonder and mystery.

One day we may know the secrets of the Coral Castle. Until then, this tourist attraction will simply amaze and awe its visitors that are lucky enough to find their way there. Without a doubt, the Coral Castle is a symbol of a forgotten knowledge that once existed and that Edward was able to find again. Call it an ancient wonder or an awesome tourist attraction; it is well worth the visit if you are ever in southern Florida.
