Reuters reported that copper rallied as a fall in production at the world's top copper mine put its longer term supply fundamentals squarely back in focus and as worries over sovereign debt in the euro zone eased.
Three month copper on the London Metal Exchange traded at USD 9,005 per tonne at 0957 GMT, versus a close of USD 8,860 per tonne on Tuesday. The metal used in power and construction fell to a five month trough of USD 8,504.50 on May 12 and has since struggled to regain momentum. Copper Benefication Plants
Ms Gayle Berry analyst of Barclays Capital said that "The headline news about Escondida is a reminder to people that this is a market where the raw material picture is extremely tight this year. We're not out of the woods yet in terms of a sea change in macro sentiment. People are coming to terms with that we're transitioning to a phase of more mature growth which will come with a slower growth rate."
Copper output from the worlds largest mine, Chile's Escondida fell 4.2% in the Q1 versus a year ago to 235,270 tonnes on maintenance and lower ore grades. Escondida said that its output during the Q1 comprised 157,976 tonnes of copper contained in concentrate and 77,294 tonnes of copper cathodes.
Ms Berry noted that the market for copper scrap is tightening. This, plus a narrowing differential between copper cash and three-month prices suggest nearby demand may be improving. However, LME copper stocks climbed by a small 125 tonnes today and at 469,375 tonnes are close to one year highs. She said that the moves in LME inventory data are masking what is otherwise quite a healthy market in terms of underlying demand and stocks. Copper Crusher.
FastMarkets said that given still fickle sentiment in broader markets, traders were acting on very short-term basis and watching charts for signals. At the moment the base metals are benefiting from positive demand expectations and are rallying after recent base building. However, it is still unclear whether this is the start of a more substantial rebound or a dead cat bounce and will require copper to close above USD 9,210 and zinc USD 2,235 for confirmation.
