Cool Gadgets Inspired By 1970s Science Fiction

By:

When I was younger, my favourite television programmes were Star Trek, Flash Gordon and Tomorrow's World. Yes, I am a seventies child who has dreamed of all the amazing gadgets and gizmos the future would bring since I can remember. Needless to say, X-Ray specs have yet to come onto the market, but there are a whole heap of cool gadgets out there to buy that make me feel like I am in my very own science fiction story.

A few years ago, inspired by Star Trek and Futurama, I decided that what the world really needed was a mobile phone that you could wear on your wrist. This would not only be one of the coolest gadgets in the world, it would be convenient and practical. For a start, instead of fishing around in your bag to just miss a call, you could answer, or not as the case may be, a call immediately. It would also be handy in meetings to be able to have a surreptitious peek at the caller ID to decide whether or not you should leg it out of that all important board meeting. Lastly, it would reduce the chances of having an extremely expensive handset snatched from your grasp whilst trying to navigate using Google Maps in a dark alleyway.

Okay, so maybe that last point is just trying desperately to justify my desire for sci-fi inspired technology. The good news is though, that I'm not the only one who had this idea, and those clever folks who make electrical goods and mobile gadgetry have at last made mobile phone watches. As far as cool gadgets go, these watches are pretty good, but there is so much room for improvement. Rather than looking like a watch, which is inherently small, they should take on the aesthetics of the iPhone. This is not only more sci-fi cool, it also makes the features easier to use.

To understand my vision, simply take an iPhone and Sellotape it to your lower arm horizontally and equip yourself with a Bluetooth headset. This is essentially the prototype of my vision of cool gadgets of the future. An internet browsing platform that incorporates phone calls and instant messaging along with all the other essential apps delivered by third party developers. Spend the day using your prized 4th generation mobile in this manner and tell me that this is not what you want from the gadget of tomorrow.
