Conversing In Color

Conversing In Color

By:

Of all the languages in the world in which we communicate with daily, the language of color is probably the one that is most used, and at the same time, also the most overlooked form of communication at our disposal. When we were very young, we were greatly attracted by toys of bright colors. When we got a little older, we started having our favorite crayon colors, or the favorite color of paper which we cut into things. We then started making color choices with the toys and dresses we buy or ask our parents to buy. As we grow even older, a whole world of colors and their meanings started exploding before us. Slowly and slowly, we became more and more color conscious.

Not many people will disagree about the effect color has on human emotions, though they may definitely disagree on the kind of emotions each color brings about. There are also of course many generally accepted meanings of colors, like the traffic lights which carry the same meaning the world over, the white flag in the battle fields, and the yellow and red cards in the game of football. Many studies have also been done concerning with the association between mood and color. For example, blue may represent a calm and relaxed mood while red may represent energy and excitement.

It is said that the predominance of yellow in van Goghs paintings was due to his fascination with the color yellow which expresses his lust for life. Picassos Blue Period is said to have produced his most sentimental paintings. What ever the reasons were for them choosing their pallets, or what ever reason a child chooses a blue teddy bear to a brown one, it is quite clear that they were not done randomly. They do it with certain feelings they have for a particular color.

We are also somewhat affected by the stage lightings in theatres or even by the colors of the walls painted in the rooms we enter. We do make choices about whether to but a beautiful pigeon blood ruby or a deep blue sapphire or even a yellow toothbrush or a purple one. And the most amazingly strange fact of all is, whether we are aware of it or not, we are from moment to moment in conversation with non living entities in the language of color.
