Controlling Fungus Gnats, How To Keep Your Hydroponic Garden Pest Free

By:

Most hydroponic gardeners face immense problems from pests that destroy their plants. As a result, they need to know how to deal with fungus, spores and other pests so that their plants are in excellent condition. An uncontrolled pest problem can destroy an entire crop and controlling fungus gnats and other pests should be foremost in the minds of most formers.

Fungus gnats are especially dangerous to hydroponically grown plants because their larvae thrive in the moisture rich conditions of hydroponics.

The water that these plants grow in is rich in nutrients which the larvae also make good use of. They usually feed on fungus or any rotting material in the growing medium. However, they also feed on the plants in case their food supply has been depleted. They burrow into the roots of the plants, leading to a condition called root rot that, quite naturally, results in lower yields from the plants.

Hydroponics farmers need to educate themselves regarding the latest methods of pest control so that they can find out how to deal with fungus, spores and other pests on their own. The treatment plan they utilize should be effective and provide them with long term solutions to their problem. At the same time, the treatment plan for controlling pests, fungus gnats in particular, should not consist of any toxic substances that can affect the quality of the fruits and vegetables that are grown.

One way of controlling fungus gnats population is by using block covers on the medium on which the plants are grown. This prevents light from reaching the roots, thereby preventing the growth of algae that the larvae feed on. These block covers also prevent the gnats from laying their eggs on the roots of the plants.

Another good method is to use organic pesticides to control the problem. These substances control the fungus as well as the gnat larvae without adding toxins to the environment. Many people these days make use of specially procured nematodes to feed on the larvae so that there is absolutely no need for any pesticide. However, care has then to be taken to not apply any pesticide to the plant because it can kill the nematodes as well.

You need to find a good and cost effective solution to the problem of controlling fungus gnats and other pests because if you let it go unchecked you could lose your entire crop.
