Controlled Access Important In Digital Signage Software Systems

By:

Digital signage systems allow for speedy, effortless, and endless changeovers for signage content. This quality is highly coveted by consumer-driven businesses and other high-information firms. It greatly expands advertising and marketing options. It reduces labor and other operating costs. It boosts sales figures. For some companies and industries, digital signage changes the way business is done. But digital signage does have potential pitfalls that must be avoided during the implementation and management of the signage system.

Digital Signage Drawbacks
The most commonly cited drawback of digital signage systems is the upfront cost. Needless to say, digital displays and software solutions cost significantly more than conventional signage. Though many companies will recognize the long-term value of digital signage, without this return on investment digital signage is unlikely to be a wise business investment. But this laser-like focus on the bottom line shouldn't completely consume the consideration of other drawbacks. Specifically, centralized control, the number of people who have access to the system, and a potential lack of oversight may lead to very visible and costly gaffes.

The Disgruntled Employee
Disgruntled employees who have access to digital signage systems may constitute a significant risk to businesses, their reputation, and public relations. In one recent example, a Taco Bell/KFC employee in Depew, New York quit his job and left an explicit message on the restaurant's outdoor readerboard. The fallout included widespread media coverage, although a single instance of colorful-ways-to-quit-a-job is unlikely to damage a national brand.

On the other hand, giving a business the proverbial finger is far from the worst possible outcome a disgruntled employee could exact. Sensitive information or a message that is truly damaging to the company's brand is easily imaginable for many companies. Indeed, in today's economy in which workers are commonly asked to work longer hours for less compensation, many employees feel disgruntled at the end of their employment, which is often self-imposed. The reason the Taco Bell/KFC employee felt slighted? He was required to work on the 4th of July after working 22 straight days.

Weighing Pros and Cons
That said, digital signage systems may not deliver the type of promised operational efficiency if only the head manager has access to the content management system. Businesses must carefully weigh the pros and cons of which employees have access to the system. Digital signage software firms, however, may confer greater versatility in this regard. Controlled access software may give lower level employees the ability to manage preset messages, while giving full access to managers and other trusted employees.
