Control Over Cravings

Control Over Cravings

By:

Do you find yourself craving "bad foods" some days? If it's occasional (re: that time of the month), it may be normal, but if you're constantly on the hunt to satisfy a craving, it's time to do some "spring cleaning" on your body. You want to be in control of your body, instead of letting it control you.

First, check your diet. If you are craving sugary foods or refined carbohydrates, think back to your last meal. Did you consume high glycemic foods (ie. white bread, sugary fruits, candy, etc.)? If the answer is yes, you may need to re-evaluate your diet.

Eating complex carbohydrates, such as oats, brown rice, and vegetables, keeps you satisfied because they digest more slowly than their high-glycemic counterparts. They also serve to keep your energy levels high while burning calories! Try eating them with protein every three hours to keep your blood sugar levels stable.

Second, check your mood. When serotonin levels decrease (ie. the feel good chemical in your body), we tend to crave sugary or salty foods. Try going for a walk, reading your favorite book, or calling a friend for an instant mood-booster.

Another way to stay accountable is to write down your personal goals and look over it when you're feeling anxious or blue. Having bad days are inevitable, so it's best to be prepared for them!

Third, take an inventory of your cravings. Are they constant? Are you unable to control them (normal "cravings" go away after about 10 to 15 minutes)? Do you feel helpless about them? If you answered yes to any of these questions, and your diet is "clean" and you aren't PMS'ing, you may want to have your insulin levels checked by your doctor.

Problems with your blood sugar and insulin can be the culprit behind overwhelming cravings, and they should be addressed by your primary physician.

I would also suggest having your doctor check all of your hormonal, vitamin and thyroid levels if you are experiencing cravings to this degree. If you don't already know, I used to be consumed by my horrible cravings! They couldn't be controlled with a proper diet (though I tried) or with any other distraction. I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Insulin Resistance in 2007, and since then, I can now control my cravings with the first two items on this list. Talk to your doctor today if you think it's a problem!
