Contrast Sensitivity - Frequently Asked Questions (faq)

By:

Contrast sensitivity allows for objects in different areas of space to be discerned from each other. Here, we will answer some frequently asked questions about contrast sensitivity and afflictions that can affect it.

WHAT IS CONTRAST SENSITIVITY?

Contrast sensitivity is a patients ability to discern an object in their line of sight from the objects background. Contrast is essentially the difference in brightness between the objects in a picture or view.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Contrast sensitivity is very important in developing a clear view of the world around you. If you have low contrast, you may have 20/20 vision but not see the best possible in low light conditions.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE LOW CONTRAST SENSITIVITY?

Many do not even realize they suffer from low contrast sensitivity, or may have grown accustomed to it. If a patient undergoes treatment for the condition, he or she may notice immediate results or may only notice better clarity, depth, and dimension in normal and low-light conditions.

WHAT CAUSES REDUCED CONTRAST SENSITIVITY?

Patients may suffer from reduced contrast sensitivity due to diseases of the eye, side effects from medications, or other health issues. Physical distortions in the operating parts of the eye may also contribute to lower contrast sensitivity; this may include corrective lenses or glasses.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE TO IMPROVE CONTRAST SENSITIVITY?

Special ocular lenses are available to treat low levels of contrast sensitivity. These lenses work by eliminating aberrations and thus reducing contrast issues found with other traditional lenses that can alter detail and clarity.

However, if lowered contrast sensitivity is due to other health conditions or is a side effect of medications, other treatments may be required. A complete medical history may determine if certain medications should be altered or changed, as well as uncover any unknown health issues that may be treated.

HOW MUCH IMPROVEMENT CAN I EXPECT IN MY CONTRAST SENSITIVITY?

Some patients experience vision improvements as high as 30% with the use of special optical lenses. These lenses do not change the physical components of the eye itself, but rather allow the existing parts to work better together in creating a clearer line of sight.
