Continuing Education For Paralegals

Continuing Education For Paralegals

By:

The required continuing education for paralegals ensures a high professional standard for the men and women who provide auxiliary services to attorneys and law offices. Most states have some sort of regulations regarding the number of continuing legal education hours that paralegals are mandated to complete. If youre professionally certified through a national organization such as the National Association of Legal Associates or National Federation of Paralegal Associates, you must also complete continuing education hours to stay certified. Most professional careers require some continuing education, though, so whether youre a paralegal or any other type of professional, you should expect to return to class every few years to stay sharp.

The Importance of Continuing Education for Paralegals

Even though you may not have a choice in the matter, you should appreciate everything that your continuing education courses can offer your paralegal career. Of course, you may not be able to keep your job if you dont finish the continuing education, but that isnt all. You should also appreciate the fact that you are better prepared to serve your clients if you have the continuing education to stay on top of your game. Lawyers are required to maintain MCLE credits. Thus, since many of the tasks that paralegals perform are the same as what lawyers do, it makes sense that paralegals are also held to the same standards.

The legal system in this country is always changing, and if you arent constantly returning to school every few years, its highly unlikely that you will stay on top of any changes in the law and in the rules, regulations and standards pertaining to your profession. Continuing education also helps your mind stay sharp and challenges you to stay on top of your game. If you dont refresh your knowledge continuously throughout your career, you will become stagnant; but if you do, you can always stay abreast of the latest concepts, methods and technologies.

So if youre working as a paralegal and wondering why you have to waste your time on continuing education, try to stay optimistic. Look at it this way: its an opportunity to invest in the future of your career and in your own personal growth. Whenever you increase your education, you also increase your earning potential, career qualifications, comfort and confidence in your job and competitiveness in your field. And most importantly, you are better qualified to serve the public.
