Contemporary Home decor

By: Roberto Bell

Some home owners may consider designing their home in a contemporary style, but they may be unsure as to exactly what it entails. Contemporary design is quite popular amongst today's parents, because it creates a very soft and inviting atmopshere for their children and friends. Modern design often is too cold for kids, not to mention dangerous, as a lot of modern furniture is hard, and incorporates metal or glass. The best way to get an understanding of how to decorate a room in a contemporary style would be to analyze how to fill a room.

If we take a television room for instance, we can begin to understand the process. In the T.V. room, you can expect to start decorating around the piece of furniture that holds the television. For this piece, you want a sturdy piece that is not too glossy or byzantine: a nice simple oak or maple cabinet-with glass or without. To complete the soft toned hutch, look for a soft neutral sofa in gray, beige, or brown. Attempt to incorporate a wood trim in the same color as the television stand, if possible, on the couch. A coffee table in the same wood, grain, and color is the best option for a consistent theme. A glass top can add some elegance to the room, however, if you have children you may want to reconsider. The best carpeting for contemporary decorating is beige, because it will match almost any soft wood with earthly colors.

The walls should match the carpet and not stray too far away from a nice neutral shade of white. Going too brown or too tan can really ruin the feel of the room. The lighting in a contemporary home is where you want to make an artistic expression and flare up the room just a bit. Keep the geometry of the lamps square, just like the furniture, but you want to add gold or silver finished pieces to light up the oak or maple furniture. Keep the lamps shades beige or white. Don't throw a black or green lamp shade into the room, it will throw everything off. Another place you can express yourself and stray from the earthly tones is with art on your walls or with throw pillows.

Decorating the walls with a red piece of modern art, or an impressionistic piece with pastels, can work extremely well with an otherwise neutral palette.
If you want to decorate right on the edge of contemporary and modern, because you think pure contemporary is too boring, you can incorporate slate into your tables or work with sofas that have cushions that are a separate color from the structure. For instance, a black back and white cushions.
