Contemporary Home Decor To Modernize Any Living Space

By:

Contemporary home decor is most noted for its use of stylish geometric shapes and clean, bold lines and a noted absence of clutter. The fashionable manner to decorate the home has seen many revolutions over the passing centuries but there has always been a segment of society that has enjoyed a preference for elegant simplicity.

Contemporary design utilizes many different fabrics and materials in interesting combinations. Most often neutral tones are used to create a soothing color palette which is offset by bold splashes of stronger color. Rather than favoring an overly fussy appearance, a few select pieces of artistic beauty are displayed for a bold statement.

Geometric shapes, bold, strong lines, rectangles, squares, these are the shapes that are most favored in contemporary styling. Bold lines are the order of the day, with a definite movement away from rounded shapes or fussy designs. Furniture is solid with bold rectangles and squares, positioned on well-defined straight legs. The color palette is subtle, often favoring cool shades like mushroom, camel, taupe, avocado, cream and white. More intense shades of the same color are used to enhance the theme, which is then brightened by using bold splashes of a contrasting color.

Furnishings like chairs, sofas and ottomans are squarely set on slim, elegant legs, using a rich array of materials including jute, linen, wool, silk and cotton. There is always a marked preference for subtle neutral tones like beige, white, taupe and cream. These softer shades are always offset by contrasting bold shades that are picked out in accessories and artworks in the room.

Color selection is naturally dependant upon personal tastes and the purpose of the room. Soothing tones in demure, pastel tones in shades of green or blue and silver can give the room quite a different tone than what it would if russets, golds and mocha colors were used.

Materials used in contemporary decor vary from natural woods and textured materials to more industrial ones like brushed stainless steel or glass, also utilizing stylised motifs of natural elements like plants and birds. It is most noted for never using overly patterned or fussy floral designs and is absent of frills, ruffles, tassels and fringes.

Lighting is important in completing the overall look of any contemporary home. A preference for simple yet elegant lighting is also a noticeable feature of this style of home decor. It favors inset down lights that provide a softer lighting, or the angular bold lines of wall mounted light fittings of beautifully molded glass. Standing and table lamps follow this same fashion, tall, clean lines and neutral shades for lamp covers.

Free standing lamps should be simple, preferably in materials like stainless steel or tones of black or grey with a lampshade in a bold color. Style, however, should never sacrifice comfort. The look is clean, uncluttered, bold, but comfortable. It is an elegant space where you can feel at ease hosting a cocktail party or simply curling up on the couch on a cold winters night to watch a movie with the family.
