Contemporary Art Artists

By:

Contemporary art is defined as art created in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Because the definition is so broad, contemporary art artists create a very wide variety of different styles.

As far as contemporary art artists go, David Drebin is a prime example. Drebin takes bold and unique photographs of women and landscapes. There are often no defining features to draw your eye and yet the photographs are impossible to look away from. For example, Drebins photograph titled Heaven Can Wait is technically a picture of nothing but rays of light, and yet it is beautiful and dynamic.

Light plays a big part in David Drebins photographs. Whether it just visible rays of light on an otherwise empty landscape like in Heaven Can Wait and All of a Sudden or light contrasting with dark in many of his night cityscapes such as City of Gold, Burning Hills, and London, contemporary art artists like Drebin find new and interesting ways like the use of light to distinguish their art from more defined art movements.

Another common theme in Drebins photographs is the use of contrasting colors. Many of Drebins photographs feature muted or dark backgrounds with a bright contrasting color in the foreground. A prime example of this is Girl in the Orange Dress. In his photographs of models, Drebin rarely captures faces. Instead he allows other aspects of the models to remain the focus, as seen in his aptly named photograph, Legs Beside Pool.

A popular woman in the world of contemporary art artists is the talented Jill Greenberg. Though Greenberg is a photographer like Drebin, their styles are radically different. Unlike Drebins photographs, which have dynamic backgrounds, Jill Greenberg puts her subjects in front of neutral backgrounds. Her subjects are very specific as well Greenberg usually photographs animals and children. Her collection of crying children is especially heartbreaking and unique. In her photographs, Jill Greenberg uses very harsh lighting, unlike many photographers who rely on shadows to make a photograph dynamic. This harsh lighting, however, brings a stark reality to a photograph that may otherwise be softened and blurred for effect.

Contemporary art artists continue to hone their craft using techniques that were unavailable or simply too radical for thought (or sale) in previous art movements. From the lighting of Drebin and Greenberg to the unflattering portraits of Russell Young, contemporary art artists are slowing drawing in the ragged edges of a nearly un-definable art era and are slowly but surely giving it shape and form.
