Contact Lenses Have Become More Comfortable And Convenient

By:

Contact lenses can be corrective or cosmetic or therapeutic. They are placed on the cornea to improve vision or to change the look of the eye. There are over 120 million wearers across the world. Benefits of their use over that of glasses include a wider vision field, usefulness in sports activities and their ability to better manage conditions such as aniseikonia.

Corrective lenses improve vision. They do so by lessening the refraction error by correctly focusing light to the retina. The refraction error occurs when the length of the eye and its refractive power are mismatched. Myopia, hypermetropia which are technical names for near and far sightedness, can be corrected as well as astigmatism and presbyopia. Another conditions that can be managed are color blindness.

Cosmetic lenses change the look of the eye. They may also serve in a corrective manner but not always. They can change the color of the natural eye to virtually any imaginable color. Movies, television shows, plays and other entertainment projects often seek to make the eye look demonic or clouded. Scleral ones cover the part of eye that is naturally white.

A newer trend in some Asian countries is the circle lens. They make the iris look wider and generally bigger. This is done to imitate the look of some characters found in the popular genre of anime.

Another use is in the management of some non refractive eye disorders. They can serve as a barrier or bandage for injured corneas. This prevents injurious rubbing when blinking occurs. They are a part of the treatment protocol for other conditions such as dryness, keratitis and corneal ulcers.

In his 1508 writing, Codex of the Eye, Manual D, Leonardo DaVinci wrote of a way to alter corneal power. He said it could be done by submerging the eye in water. Although no correction was described, he is given the credit for the original idea.

An 1801 idea for an eyecup proposed by Thomas Young was another predecessor. The first idea that included a plan for correction came in 1845 when Sir John Herschel described a round glass full of animal jelly. This led to the use of lenses that conformed to the shape of the eye.

In 1887, the first contact lens was successfully fitted by a German opthomologist. This first wearable incarnation was made of blown glass. The product and process were described in a journal article in 1888.

Over the course of the next century the evolution of the product included the development of the more comfortable and practical soft variety. These eventually led to lenses that could be worn for an extended period of time as well as disposable ones.

Research and development into contact lenses is ongoing. Researchers continue to explore how to make them less susceptible to bacteria. Patient compliance is another area of research. Patients often do not take proper care and infection results. Daily care, including cleaning and disinfection, is important. This is done with multipurpose solutions, daily cleaners and, sometimes ultra violet light devices.
