Selling is a process. Consultative selling is a process that allows for more sales and more referrals. Exactly what every professional sales person is looking for. Consultative selling is a simple formula tested and proven over many years and modeled from the best and most highly successful sales people of all times.

Consultative selling is a plan. As any good sales training program will teach you, it is always best to have a specific plan that you follow when proceeding through the sometimes treacherous waters of a sales presentation. Most sales people do not use any plan of any sort when selling. This is a huge mistake that can cost you thousands of dollars in commission. Just winging your presentation or playing by ear can be a much more exciting experience, but over the long run you will not be as successful.

For a metaphorical example, go ahead and imagine two different pilots. The first pilot decides to fly from point A to point B, so he jumps in his plane, takes off and starts flying directly towards his destination. In this situation, the pilot is relying completely on luck. If the sky is clear, there are no storms or bad weather, all of his equipment is working, and everything else goes his way he will probably make it to point B. If everything does not go his way, this pilot is not going to make it to his destination. Maybe he is such a good pilot that he runs right into a storm and barely makes it through.

Now let us take a look at the second pilot, he wants to fly from point a to point b. The first item on his list is to plot out exactly how to get from point A to point b. Remember he is looking for the most efficient and beneficial route for himself. The second item on his list is to check the weather to determine if he needs to avoid any bad situations. And because our second pilot is thorough, just in case he plans for a different route. You never know when the first route will not work out.

In your opinion, who do you think is going to more consistently make it to point B? Who do you feel is going to crash much more often? For that matter, who would you rather fly with?

Another happy side effect of being prepared for a situation with a consultative sales approach, is when something does come up, and it will, you will appear and be so much more confident because you have a plan and already know exactly where to go.
