Conquering Dental Anxiety With Sedation Dentistry

By:

Imagine yourself in a comfortable chair, reclined and receiving the best of care. You are fully relaxed and comfortable. You have no anxiety and no fear. Is this a new spa in Idaho Falls? Not exactly, but you may describe your next dental experience as spa-like to your unbelieving friends and family.

If you feel high levels of anxiety and fear when you think about dentists and dental procedures, you are not alone. Fear of the dentist is one of the most common fears for children and adults alike. For many people, the fears are based on very real and painful memories of trips to the dentist when they were younger. With modern technology and the option of sedation dentistry, however, these negative memories can be replaced with better ones.

The Oral conscious sedation and I.V. conscious sedation are both safe and effective methods. A registered nurse monitors the patient throughout the sedation and dental procedure to ensure patient safety and comfort. In oral conscious sedation, the dentist administers a prescribed medication to the patient about an hour before the dental procedure begins. Anti-anxiety medication is used to allow the patient to feel completely relaxed, calm and comfortable throughout the procedure. Patients are awake and able to respond to the dentist.

Because of the effects of the medicine, the dentist may be able to spend more time completing steps of a procedure or several different procedures in one appointment. This means that procedures that use to require several appointments may be accomplished in one or two appointments. Patients who opt for oral conscious sedation report that time seems to pass quickly and they often do not remember details of the procedure. Some patients doze off even as the dentists works.

I.V. conscious sedation is administered through an I.V. and works more quickly than oral conscious sedation. Again, the patient is carefully monitored by a registered nurse. I.V. sedation is option some patients choose when having tooth extractions or oral surgery. There are a wide range of sedatives that can be used and no sedative will be administered until a thorough medical history and medication check have been done.

Once you used sedation during a dental procedure, you will find that your fears and anxieties about dental work begin to lessen.
With the help of sedation dentistry, you can restore your dental health and conquer your dental fears.
