Located on the banks of the Connecticut River Glastonbury Connecticut is a blend of charming neighborhoods and small commercial centers. This Hartford suburb retains a large amount of open space combined with unique colonial character and heritage making it one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.

Originally founded in 1693, Glastonbury grew as a shipbuilding and milling town, with oak forests for timber and reliable waterpower. Glastonbury has the highest number of pre-Revolutionary homes in Connecticut. Its pre-Revolutionary antique houses are complemented with a variety of well-preserved colonial and federal styles, contemporary designed homes, condominiums and small apartments. These stunning homes include some of the most remarkable examples of architecture in New England.

Glastonbury stretches from the Connecticut River extending up into into the foothills offering beautiful views of the Hartford's skyline. Some major developments in the town have been built almost entirely on relatively steep hills, such as "Minnechaug Mountain", which is a major residential area developed from the 70s until late 90s. Also growing with new subdivisions is the area surrounding Diamond Lake.

Glastonbury has purchased hundreds of acres of open space to protect the communities thickly wooded lots and farmland. Glastonbury has one of Connecticut's largest state forests, Meshomasic State Forest, which is a popular area for hiking, fishing, and hunting.

Cotton Hollow Preserve and the Connecticut River maintain habitats for many unique New England animal and plant species. Leisure activities in a wildlife preserve is provided in Earle Park. The Holland Brook Center is maintained by the Audubon Society, which exhibits live animals and plant life indigenous to Connecticut.

Also well known in this agricultural town is the J.H. Hale Orchards which began in Glastonbury. John Howard Hale was known as the Peach King who developed a peach that could withstand New England winters and was disease resistant.

Town parks, baseball diamonds and playgrounds offer individual and team sports, including tennis, ice-skating swimming and golf. Hiking trails and horseback riding along with camping facilities are available in Gay City State Park.

Continuing education programs for adults are also available through Glastonbury's public school system. Glastonbury borders the adjacent towns and cities of East Hartford, Portland, Hebron, Cromwell, Wethersfield, Marlborough, Manchester, East Hampton, Rocky Hill and Bolton.

The combination of Glastonbury's easy commuting distance from major metropolitan centers, its colonial and contemporary charm with its relatively abundant open space and hill top views of the Hartford Skyline makes Glastonbury Connecticut one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.
