Conflict diamonds are those that are sold to fund terrorist groups and other unlawful organizations. These groups take charge of countries that are rich in diamonds and have been known to not only take over communities but also terrorize and hurt the people. Until recently, many people did not know that the diamonds they wore around their necks were bought at the expense of many lives. However, now that people are aware of this issue, more and more people are looking to invest in conflict free diamonds.
To do this, such organizations as the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme have emerged. This organization seeks to keep track of every rough diamond that enters a country that endorses the groups efforts. The group keeps records of the shipping and transportation of diamonds and provides information to ensure that the gems are not coming from conflict zones or questionable groups.
Canada is one country that has made leaps and strides to keep track of the diamonds that were found within its boundaries. There is now a Code (the Voluntary Code of Conduct for Authenticating Canadian Diamond Claims) that has created parameters or guidelines to identify if a diamond is not only from Canada, but is also conflict free. Thus, companies who want the endorsement of the Code need to provide documentation of where the diamond came from, among other details. Companies or retailers who provide appropriate information are then listed on the Codes website.
As more and more consumers become aware of conflict diamonds, more are seeking answers and information about the jewels they want to buy. Thus, more and more consumers are asking for assurance and authentication that the diamonds they see and might buy are conflict free. Thus, more retailers are making sure that the diamonds in question have been acquired from appropriate channels and have not been bought from groups who are funded by, or have had ties with terrorist groups or other unlawful organizations. Because of this, the issue has received even more attention.
Many people believe it will take time for
conflict free diamonds to become the norm versus the exception. As more people desire conflict free diamonds, more businesses and retailers will also demand this of the products they invest in. Additionally, as more consumers start to care, so too will the governments of various countries. Thus, it is only a matter of time before everyone shopping for a diamond asks, Are your diamonds conflict free?
