Concrete Sealer - The Benefits Of Applying It To A Concrete Surface

If you're considering taking on the task of laying a foundation for your home then the best idea would be to use a good concrete sealer when the concrete foundation is complete. Experts say that a good concrete sealer is necessary in order to add a protective barrier on your concrete surface.

To help prolong the life of your surface you can easily apply the sealer to the foundation. The sealer is not so different from paint in that it can be easily painted on. The only difference from paint is that the sealer is clear. The concrete sealer is applied to the foundation in order to stop contaminants like water and oil from penetrating the concrete surface

The funny thing is, when an individual is attempting to lay a concrete foundation they are required to mix the substance with water before it can be poured. However, after the concrete has dried, water is the worst thing for it. When water begins to seep into the dried surface of the concrete, it can cause the foundation to lose its hardened structure. This could then lead to cracks and other abrasions to the surface, thus ruining the new foundation that was previously laid.

Concrete is known to be porous, like a sponge. Therefore applying a concrete sealer to the concrete surface will in effect block off the pours and stop any liquids or other contaminants from entering the surface. The sealer is best applied when the concrete has dried.

Before applying the sealer you need to make sure that the surface of the concrete does not have any dirt or debris. Brush off any debris that is present using a brush or cloth. If all the dirt is not removed then your concrete surface may look uneven as it will get between the sealer and the concrete.

A thin coat of sealer is all that is needed for your surface. You should avoid using excessive amounts of sealer, instead spread the sealer on the concrete surface, do not pour it on.

You can decide which type of sealer you want to apply to your concrete surface. There are several types but the main ones are transparent and colored. The obvious choice for a foundation would be the transparent option.

Usually, sealers are not expensive so you should not have to pay much to coat your entire foundation. Just make sure to apply the sealer using a brush and not to pour it straight on to the concrete.

Remember that you should apply a concrete sealer to your concrete if you want it to last over time. If you do not, then you may run into trouble in years to come when the water wears down the concrete and causes severe structural problems due to the weakness of the foundation.
