Computer Technologies Are Changing Science Fiction

By:

One of the biggest complaints about science fiction programming is the relative low quality that is often found in this genre. Many of the great stories that science fiction fans love require the integration of relatively high levels of technology. This has meant that many great stories were unable to be told using current technologies. Additionally, these technological requirements usually carried a high price tag.

Whether or not one thinks science fiction scripts have improved in recent years is of course a matter of debate, but there is no doubt that modern computer generated effects have contributed to the overall feel of quality in science fiction programming. Today, programs such as Smallville, the various Stargate television programs and shows such as Fringe all benefit greatly from having quality computer generated effects.

Many recent science fiction programs, such as Battlestar Galatica and Caprica, would have been impossible before the computer revolution. Impressive breakthroughs in computing, and the fact that computers have become ubiquitous and inexpensive, have no doubt contributed to the steady growth of science fiction programming on television.

If you enjoy science fiction, but stopped watching it due to poor quality programming, it is worth trying again. You will find that there are many great programs out there, and they are at least worth giving a try. Many of these look a lot better than older science fiction films and often look just as great as many low budget movies. This shows that science fiction really has come a long way. If you haven't watched it lately, try watching again.

Odds are that you are likely to see more and more science fiction and even horror shows, such as True Blood, on television in the coming years. As computing power increases and the number of people working with the technology grows every year, television viewers will likely benefit greatly from these developments.
