Computer Science Or Information Science - Choosing Your Technology Major

By:

If you want to go to a University to learn about computers or to get a job working in computers then you generally want to go with one of two majors, Computer Science and Information Science. Many students don't know the differences between the two so I've written this article to help identify the differences and determine which major is correct for you.

Computer Science is about one thing and one thing only: programming. If you are interested in making computer software or working with computer hardware or a combination of both, then Computer Science is the major for you. This major will teach you about things such as C++/Visual Basic programming, SQL databases, software/hardware interaction and operating systems. Computer science is more geared towards manipulating computers to do what you want them to do and it is definitely the more technical of the two majors.

Information Science is a broader field. Admittedly Information Science is not all about computers it is more about the creation, transmission, accessibility and archival of information. Today computers are responsible for most information processing/transmission. Therefore most of your classes are geared towards computers but in a more general sense. You'll learn about web design, office programs such as excel access and word, graphic design, basic software programming, computer networking and more. Information Science is considered a more "general" major. The bulk of your classes work with computers but many of your classes are about the Information Process and how information becomes knowledge.

I hope this gives you a decent idea of which major you'll be picking when you enter University. At the very least now you know there is a different between Computer Science and Information Science! If you have any other questions you should not hesitate to contact your advisor. Every University student has an advisor so seek him or her out and put him or her to work. You're paying for it after all.
