Comptia A Plus Retraining Compared

By:

Four separate areas of study make up a full CompTIA A+; you're qualified as competent at A+ when you've passed the test for two of the four areas. Because of this, the majority of training establishments only have two of the courses on their syllabus. You'll find that it's necessary to have the teaching in all areas as many jobs will demand knowledge and skills of all four areas. Don't feel pressured to complete all 4 certifications, but it seems common sense that you at least have a working knowledge of every area.

As well as being taught how to build PC's and fix them, trainees on A+ courses will be shown how to work in antistatic conditions, how to fault find, to diagnose and to remotely access problems.

If you're considering being the person who is involved with a big team - in network support, build on A+ with Network+, or follow the Microsoft route - MCP's, MCSA or MCSE to give you a more advanced experience of the way networks work.

Watch out that all exams that you're considering will be commercially viable and are up-to-date. 'In-house' exams and the certificates they come with are generally useless.

If the accreditation doesn't feature a company like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA, then chances are it could have been a waste of time and effort - because no-one will recognise it.

Getting your first commercial position sometimes feels easier to handle with the help of a Job Placement Assistance facility. Don't get overly impressed with this service - it's easy for eager sales people to overplay it. Ultimately, the huge shortage of staff in Great Britain is what will make you attractive to employers.

Work on polishing up your CV right away however (advice and support for this should come from your course provider). Don't delay until you've qualified.

Getting your CV considered is more than not being known. A decent number of junior jobs are got by students (sometimes when they've only just got going.)

If it's important to you to find work near your home, then you'll probably find that a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service can generally be more appropriate than the trainer's recruitment division, as they're far more likely to be familiar with local employment needs.

A good number of students, it seems, are prepared to study their hearts out (for years sometimes), only to do nothing special when finding their first job. Market yourself... Do your best to put yourself out there. Don't think a job's just going to jump out in front of you.

Quite often, students have issues with a single courseware aspect very rarely considered: How the training is broken down and delivered to your home.

Usually, you'll enrol on a course requiring 1-3 years study and receive one element at a time until graduation. This sounds logical on one level, until you consider this:

Often, the staged breakdown prescribed by the provider doesn't suit you. You may find it a stretch to finalise all the elements inside of their particular timetable?

To be honest, the perfect answer is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but get all the study materials at the start. Meaning you've got it all should you not complete it as fast as they'd like.

Please understand this most important point: Always get full 24x7 instructor support. You'll definitely experience problems if you don't follow this rule rigidly.

Always avoid training that only supports students with a call-centre messaging service when it's outside of usual working hours. Companies will try to talk you round from this line of reasoning. The simple fact of the matter is - support is needed when it's needed - not when it's convenient for them.

World-class organisations utilise an internet-based 24 hours-a-day service involving many support centres from around the world. You get a single, easy-to-use environment which seamlessly accesses whichever office is appropriate no matter what time of day it is: Support on demand.

Find a trainer that offers this level of study support. Only true live 24x7 round-the-clock support gives you the confidence to make it.
