Composting - A Good Way To Reduce Waste

By:

Composting is a very natural and good way to restore the nutrients in our soil. Unlike fertilizers, compost has no negative effects on our health. In addition to that, plants from these soils are much healthier and have a much greater ability to fight off pests and diseases, so the use of harmful pesticides is minimized. Organic materials of the soil feed beneficial organisms and improve moisture retention. You will save a lot of money by not needing to buy soil conditioners, bagged manures, fertilizers, pesticides etc. And by composting your kitchen and yard trimmings you can significantly reduce the waste you produce.

There are two types of compost: cold compost piles and hot compost piles. Cold compost piles do not require much equipment and effort. But it takes much longer time to complete and do not kill pathogens or weeds. It may also require filtering when completed. A hot compost pile requires more effort, but takes very less time, kills pathogens and weeds and disposes of lots of material.

For hot compost, you need equipments like bucket or container, rake for gathering yard wastes, compost bin or compost tumbler, garden hose, garden fork (4-pronged), shovel and wheelbarrow or cart. A compost bin or a compost tumbler becomes important for a variety of reasons. If you do not use a compost bin or a compost tumbler, managing the compost will become a lot more difficult. Small kids, pets etc will destroy your organic waste pile if you do not use a compost bin or tumbler. By using a compost bin or tumbler your waste will not be affected by rains or winds either. Having a compost bin or tumbler also allows you to maintain a cubic ora cylinder shape to the pile which provides adequate mass for the compost to work properly.

There are a lot of varieties of compost bin available, depending on the bin size, styles, capacity, aesthetics, features and materials. The compost bin is available for all the climatic conditions. Compost tumblers having drum, roller and barrel style of rotating help in breaking down waste by about 20 % faster. Both compost bin and compost tumblers make it much easier for you to turn the pile, hence speeding up the whole process.
