Homeowners looking for a new front door will probably consider a upvc door first, however there is now a new type of door on the market, the composite door. These new doors are becoming more popular as the replacement door of choice for aesthetic and practical reasons.

Just like upvc doors, the composite door is available in a huge range of styles, colours and glazing options with almost endless combinations. They also offer the great looks of a quality wooden door and have more benefits that the upvc, making them an excellent choice. Composite doors have an expected life span of around 35 years far exceeding the expected 20 year expected life span of a upvc door; although they can be a little more expensive, the extended life span means that they usually work out cheaper. Like their counterparts composite doors require no time consuming or expensive maintenance, just a regular clean with a soft cloth.

Composite doors are a door that is made up of two or more components, the most popular type are the glass re-inforced plastic (GRP) coated, timber framed with foam insulation. The GRP coating protects the door from the weather ensuring it is waterproof. Another option that is becoming increasingly popular are the solid timber core doors that are then encapsulated within thermo plastic skins protecting them from the weather.

Once the style, colour and glazing options have been chosen, the other main factors to consider are the level of security and the thermally efficiency of the door. Unfortunately security is a major consideration for all homeowners with increased levels of burglary it is important to ensure your home is secure, most composite doors have multipoint locking systems which secure the door into the frame in 3 or more places; the locks are usually anti-drill, anti-bump and anti-pick. Check with your supplier that the door meets the criteria of one of the nationally recognised Police approved schemes. As the doors do not rot the level of security they provide does not decrease during their lifespan, as timber doors age and rot the level of security they offer does decrease as the doors age.

All doors sold in the UK are required to meet building regulations in terms of the thermal efficiency of the door. The doors are tested to see how draft proof they are and how much heat is lost through the door, they are measured in terms of U value with the lower the U value the more thermally efficient the door and the larger the savings on your fuel bills.

With all the benefits that composite doors offer it is easy to see why they are becoming so popular.
