Knowing how your toilet works is the best way to decide if you can fix a problem yourself with parts and tools from the local hardware store, or if you need to call a plumber in order to fix a more serious problem. The components of a toilet start with the tank, where problems arise most of the time. The toilet tank's purpose is to hold water that is necessary to flush the toilet and to keep the plumbing parts hidden from view that fill the tank and empty it when you flush the toilet. Most of the time, your toilet tank can be accessed by lifting the ceramic lid.

Toilet tanks are often quite different inside because of different manufacturers or new technologies and materials. However, there are two components that make up toilet tanks, often varying a bit from model to model but basically the same. The first is the fill valve system and the second is the flush valve. The fill valve is the component that fills the toilet tank with water and is sometimes known as a refill valve. Generally, there are four types, the Plunger type, Float Cup type, Float less System and Diaphragm Type Fill Valve System.

The flush valve system allows water to leave the tank and keeps the water from leaking into the toilet when it is not needed, as well as allowing the tank to refill completely for the next flushing. You will see this component bolted to the bottom of the tank and the parts include the overflow pipe and the seat for the valve. There are two different types of flush valves that are used to seal the valve seat. Normally, it is either a tapered rubber float ball or a flapper ball. The flapper balls are on newer models and connect to the handle with a chain.

Knowing how your toilet works can help you fix common problems. One of the biggest problems that people experience with toilets is having them run constantly. This can be caused by several different factors, from the basic to the complicated. A disconnected or kinked chain can cause this problem as well as the lift wire being kinked. This can also happen if the float ball is rubbing the side of the tank, causing it not to fill completely. Also, the water level in the tank could be too high and water could be running into the overflow pipe.

Knowing the different parts of a toilet and the common causes for certain problems will enable you decide whether you need to call a plumbing professional or you can do the simple repair yourself. For instance, if obviously the chain has become unhooked or kinked then you can easily fix this yourself, but other problems that can cause the toilet to run, or other plumbing concerns, especially with main lines such as water or sewer lines, or anything related to gas lines should be worked on by a licensed plumber and not by the average homeowner.
