Compatibility In Digital Signage Software And Systems

By:

Depending on who you ask, digital signage systems are either incredibly compatible or still mired in a wide variety of incompatible formats. Writing for the UK publication PR Fire, Thomas Fraser-Bacon says, "The digital out of home industry is currently renowned for being extremely fragmented in terms of hardware, software and their capabilities." Meanwhile, much of the larger digital signage press has been touting increasing compatibility of digital signage software and hardware components as well as better flexibility of digital signage systems in general.

No doubt, both claims have an element of truth. Possibly some of this seeming contradiction has to do with different product releases in the UK and US markets. A bigger factor likely has to do with the various capabilities and performance of casual-use and commercial software systems. It's true that for many years there was a proliferation of digital software and hardware products that are largely incompatible. Yet, commercial software systems frequently include the capability to interface and integrate numerous, disparate software formats and deliver this integrated content to essentially type of hardware player and digital display unit.

Cost, not Availability, at Issue
These complex software features take a considerable amount of investment to develop, market, and implement for specific business applications. For the most part, this is why commercial software products and licensing agreements cost so much as compared to casual-use software. Digital signage software firms frequently market the user-friendly, universally compatible nature of their software systems. But this feature has to do with sophisticated software code that manages the inherent incompatibility of various external software and hardware components. Again, when it comes to the compatibility of digital signage software, the truth cuts both ways. This is also why, despite the significantly higher costs of commercial software, it's a no-brainer choice for businesses that demand this type of compatibility and versatility.

Software as a Service
The tension between disparate software applications and the system software that integrates these external applications quite possibly explains the growing popularity of software as a service (SaaS). These software systems are hosted through off-site servers that are automatically updated, often without any prompting from the user, to keep pace with new, otherwise incompatible, software products. Software as a service comes with other advantages as well such as easy scalability. Yet, if the software industry as a whole overcomes the larger incompatibility of their product designs, this paradigm could be threatened as software as a service comes with its own downside. A disruption to online connectivity, for example, can hamper the reliability of these systems.
